Océan des Monstres was originally composed under the title Émanation. During the compositional process, I was not trying to tell a story or depict a specific event.

Only after the piece was largely complete, while listening back, did I begin to recognise unexpected musical associations.

Among them were traces of George Martin's score for Yellow Submarine, especially Sea of Monsters, music that had fascinated me as a child. Those associations gradually connected with a much older memory: nearly drowning during my first swimming lesson, an experience that left me with a lifelong stutter.

After I recognised these connections the title Océan des Monstres emerged.
