Peter Terpstra

The following lyrics for the next few songs were written by Peter Terpstra.

Peter comes from a world of technology, television and systems, where looking closely and understanding how things work is his second nature. He observes, looks for what is really going on beneath the surface, and writes without much embellishment.

We first met more than 30 years ago through a professional working relationship. I regularly ran into problems with computers, MIDI and video, and Peter was the man who could always solve them. And he still is. Over the years, we became good friends.

It has always been a great pleasure for me to give something back to him by occasionally setting some of his remarkable texts and observations to music. Over the years, we discovered that words can sometimes do the same thing as music: say something you may have understood rationally for a long time, but never quite felt in that way before.

One of Peter's lines in particular has always stayed with me: “The question that woke me with a start: will you die before I do?”

That line still gives me chills. It touches something very deep in love: the fear that the person you love may one day no longer be there. Such a simple question, and yet it goes straight to the heart of it. Wow. And, honestly, phew.

Yes, his texts are often very direct and always evoke images and emotions in me. Very inspiring, as you will hear.

A small disclaimer: Marie Agnes is the only song that was fully completed. The others, unfortunately, remained first drafts.

Will Your Candle Go Out First?

I wanted the song ‘Ga jij eerder dood’ in a solid rock style à la E.L.O. Big, with an

orchestra, choir, the lot! You could also say there’s a hint of the Dutch band 'Van Dik

Hout' in it. Well, hmm, that’s rather unfortunate. :-) It’s a demo, so after the chorus this song also stops abruptly.

The musical candle ultimately went out a little earlier than hoped.

Marie Agnes

A passionate summer romance comes to an end with the end of the holiday. A very short love story. Once again, I went big, even with a big wink at Carel Kraayenhof’s bandoneon performance at the wedding of Willem-Alexander and Máxima.

The wink, but of course performed seriously, as always.

Not of This World

During the three years I was under contract with Talpa Music, the management of

singer Jeroen van der Boom put out a songwriting assignment among the affiliated

composers: write a new hit single. Several composers took up the challenge, myself

included. This was my submission. A song about someone so beautiful and radiant that she seems almost otherworldly.

She seems almost otherworldly, like an angel, and somehow the guy is the lucky one who gets to be this close to her.

In the end, the song wasn’t chosen. Shame, I thought it was actually ‘great’.  It’s a demo, so after the chorus this song also stops abruptly. So sorry...

What a Bummer

So what do you do with a rejection like the one above? Peter felt it and turned it into

lyrics, and I simply turned it into a song. I deliberately went for the mood and style of

John Lennon’s Nobody Loves You (When You’re Down and Out).

"Nobody wants me... I’m such a poor, misunderstood genius...".  That sort of thing.

A little song about rejection, disappointment and a bit of self-pity.

Fuckin’ bummer. 😏

Wat een verdriet
