When I was nineteen, I developed a lump in my neck. It gradually grew so large that someone finally decided it needed looking at. It turned out to be a branchial cleft cyst, a remnant of embryonic tissue that normally disappears early in development. Mine didn't.

I guess I wanted to remain a fish.

In hospital, I loved listening to 'I hear you now' (by Jon & Vangelis) and 'Moonlight and Muzak' (by M).

The warm synths and Moog sounds of these tracks made me happy during a miserable week in hospital. At the same time, I felt I was saying goodbye to the warm, carefree seventies.

Now I was becoming a grown-up. At least I thought so...

This hospital was demolished in 1990.
