Eigenwegwijs (VPRO, 2002–2008)

The series followed children as they showed their daily journey from home to school.

Sophie dreams of becoming a violinist and makes up songs along the way about all the

things she sees. Bram is severely visually impaired and talks about his sometimes dangerous experiences.

On the TV page, you can see excerpts from the series. Here you can only hear a fragment of the song 'Op de fiets door de stad': it is about a girl cycling through the city, imagining that the streets are rivers. Sophie wrote the lyrics herself, and I set them to music.

I deliberately chose a cheerful seventies disco feel, with a big wink to the kind of song you might find in a musical film.

I imagined a scene: a bit of chatting. a bit of chatting with Mum, grabbing her schoolbag, the music kicks in, and suddenly we see the girl cycling to school, singing this song. But it was only a demo, so I sing it myself. Unfortunately, no footage of this episode has survived.
