Hi,
Music I once heard remains hidden for years. An image, a sound, an event, something I once saw or heard and thought I had long forgotten, can suddenly resurface. Before I know it, it has found its way into the things I’m making now and can suddenly crawl out of the water. Sometimes I discover where it actually came from.
All my life I’ve used art and music to try to make a little sense of things and, to be honest, also to create a place for myself where I feel really safe, at least as long as I’m lost in it.
Over the years I’ve learned to trust my instincts more and more (Bart is Bart, wtf does it actually matter?), follow my own ideas, and somehow all of that turns into something I could never have planned beforehand.
So often it feels as if I’m really only there when the work is making itself. This happens in a kind of trance, because whenever a piece is finished, I still think (and thank God for that): “How the hell did that just happen?!!”
Maybe this website works in much the same way.
There is no particular order. You can start with what I’m making now (see Work and Project), or go back in time (Archive) and see where all the work comes from. Music takes me to a story, a story to an image, and an image perhaps back to something I made many years ago. But other connections may still come, or may have drowned.
So in that sense, I’m quite happy to keep drowning in what is here and now and in what was before, because somehow it all belongs together.
