A Muhu Manor, documentary.
Ambitious Estonian on sleepy island wants to convert former nursing home into luxury hotel.
For this documentary by director Guido Sikkink (†), screened at IDFA in 1999, I wrote the music.
My musical starting point came from a remark made by the Estonian entrepreneur in the film. He said that at first he did not feel welcome in the building, but that this changed when he brought in a piano.
His remark struck me and became the basis for the score. I gave the piano a slightly detuned, floating quality and played isolated, almost atonal notes. This strange sounding melody eventually became the recurring theme of the soundtrack. I deliberately kept the music tense, not only because of what happens in the film, but also because of the peculiar atmosphere of the large, empty house.

Mirakel op de A10 NCRV, 2001 Directed by Jelle Peter de Ruiter.
During the major renovation of Amsterdam’s A10-West ring road, daily traffic had to be drastically reduced. Mirakel op de A10 follows, at times with a distinctly comic and ironic undertone, the people trying to manage this enormous logistical operation, as well as those directly affected by it.
This is particularly evident in the first scene, in which two fruit and vegetable distributors discuss the major problem they are facing: they literally have nowhere to go.
The music responds closely to their conversation: to the pauses, the hesitations and the uncertainty, almost becoming part of the interaction itself.
In the final scene, the music takes on an exaggerated heroic character. The workers drive their mighty machines onto the now empty A10 to begin their work. A full orchestra (even joined by a barrel organ !) adds extra weight to their bold entrance, turning the roadworks into something resembling a heroic feat. The tongue-in-cheek nature of it is clear: they are simply doing their job!
